HISTORY

The idea to produce a Swedish whisky was conceived by eight friends in a mountain cabin back in 1998. To ensure they stayed in touch after studying engineering together, the group had a tradition of meeting up in Sälen once a year. This time, purely by chance, everyone had brought along a bottle of whisky. During dinner, one of them wondered why there was no Swedish malt whisky, and, if it was possible, why hadn’t anyone already done it? The question remained unanswered but, before long,the vision to become pioneers and produce the first Swedish malt whisky took shape. One year later, in 1999, Mackmyra Svensk Whisky was established.

GRAVITY DISTILLERY

At Mackmyra we strive to make our whisky in as modern, efficient, visitor-friendly and environmentally-friendly a way as possible. To achieve this aim, we decided to build the world’s most climate-smart distillery. In 2011, our Gravity Distillery was finally ready. Standing 35 metres tall, as the name suggests this building makes use of gravity throughout the whisky-making process. It was designed by the architects TEA whose mission it was to imbue the building with a character that captures the essence of Mackmyra: playfulness, sensuality and qualitative production.

OakThe flavour of the smoke in Svensk Rök (Swedish smoke) is inspired by the old tradition of seasoning and preserving food by infusing it with juniper smoke. In this second and limited edition of Svensk Rök, we have aged our smoky recipe exclusively in new casks of American oak. This gives the whisky prominent notes of vanilla and herbs – a welcome contrast to the bold notes of peat, juniper and tar.

NOSE

Smoke, spiciness, oak, fruits and herbs. Notes of peat, juniper, toasted oak and vanilla followed by a smoky and spicy aroma with saltiness, minerals, tobacco leaves, light tariness. Arrak treats, pear fudge, ginger and vanilla.

TASTE

Peat, juniper, salt, definitively more smoky than what the nose is implying.A pleasent oaky spciness with vanilla, toasted oak, pickled figs and pear fudge. The texture is medium thick with oaky chewy notes..

AFTER TASTE

Spicy, smoky and oaky with notes of tar, tobacco leaves, bright notes of pickled figs and pear fudge.
